Your best testers write the worst bug reports — the QA paradox
TL;DR
Your best tester finds more bugs than anyone else. More bugs means more reports to write. More reports in the same hours means less time per report. Less time per report means worse reports. The paradox: the better the tester, the worse the reports — not from laziness, but from lack of time. The fix isn't "write better" — it's "make a good report cost less."
Every QA team has that one person who finds bugs faster than everyone else. They have the intuition, they know the application, they know where to look. They test faster, deeper, more creatively. This is the tester whose reports should be exemplary — because they see things others miss. The problem is, this is usually the same tester whose reports developers complain about the most.
Why? Because the math is ruthless. If reporting one bug takes 10-15 minutes, and this tester finds 10-12 bugs per day instead of the team average of 5-6, they spend 100-180 minutes just on reporting. Over 2-3 hours per day — writing, not testing.
More bugs, worse reports — why it happens
James Bach, co-creator of exploratory testing, wrote on the Satisfice blog about what he calls the "bug pipeline" — the throughput of the process from finding a bug to fixing it. The bottleneck of this pipeline is rarely finding the bug. The bottleneck is documenting it.
Consider a specific scenario. Tester A — experienced, fast — tests the payment module. In 2 hours they find 6 bugs. Now they need to report them. Each report means: open Jira, fill in fields, describe steps, take a screenshot, add environment data. Done properly — 12 minutes per report, 72 minutes total.
But Tester A knows they still have 3 other modules to test before the sprint ends. So they cut corners. Instead of 5 reproduction steps they write 3. Skip the browser version. Don't copy the console logs. Take a screenshot but without context. The report takes 6 minutes instead of 12. And it reaches a developer who opens it — and can't reproduce the bug.
The paradox mechanism — step by step:
- Step 1: Tester is skilled — finds more bugs than colleagues
- Step 2: More bugs — more time needed for reporting
- Step 3: Same working hours — fewer minutes per report
- Step 4: Fewer minutes — worse reports (incomplete, vague)
- Step 5: Worse reports — "cannot reproduce" — ping-pong with developer
- Step 6: Ping-pong — even less time for testing
- Step 7: Less time — tester starts skipping bugs — "not worth reporting"
Gerald Weinberg in "Perfect Software And Other Illusions About Testing" (2008) describes an illusion managers fall into: assuming that more bugs found means better quality. But more bugs found without adequate reporting infrastructure is just more noise in the system — more tickets, worse data, longer fix times.
What your software house loses when top testers write bad reports
The losses go in three directions simultaneously. First: the developer wastes time trying to reproduce from incomplete data. Second: the tester wastes time answering questions and supplementing reports. Third — and most expensive: bugs the tester didn't report because they decided "there's no time" escape to production.

The Capgemini World Quality Report 2023-24 shows that 25-35% of QA time goes to activities not directly related to testing — documentation, reporting, communication. For top testers, this percentage is often higher because their "bug output" exceeds the team average.
This paradox isn't unique to testers. In any profession where top performers produce more output than others and the documentation cost is fixed — documentation quality drops proportionally to volume. Doctors, auditors, consultants — same mechanism.
Discipline isn't the fix — the system is
The typical manager response to bad reports: "you need to write better reports." Training, procedures, a Jira template with mandatory fields. This approach assumes the problem is with the tester. It isn't. The problem is with a system that requires 10-15 minutes for an activity that should take a fraction of that time.
Kaner, Bach, and Pettichord in "Lessons Learned in Software Testing" (2002) say it directly: don't blame the tester for bad reports if the reporting system is too expensive. Mandatory fields in Jira won't fix the problem — the tester will type anything to pass validation. Templates won't help if filling out the template takes 12 minutes.
The only effective solution is reducing the cost of a good report. Not "write better, spend more time." Rather: "how do we make a complete report happen without extra effort."
Technical data — URL, browser, resolution, console logs — is information the browser already knows. It doesn't need to be typed manually. Reproduction steps — the tester just performed them. They shouldn't have to reconstruct them from memory 10 minutes later. Screenshot — the tester is looking at the screen with the bug. They shouldn't need to open a separate tool, capture, then paste into Jira.
If these elements are collected automatically at the moment of reporting, the cost of a good report drops from 10-15 minutes to under a minute. And suddenly the paradox disappears: the best tester who finds 12 bugs per day reports them in 12 minutes instead of 2-3 hours. Every report is complete. The developer has reproduction data on the first try.
What this means for your software house

You have a systems problem. The system forces a trade-off between report quantity and quality. The better the tester, the harder that trade-off hits.
